We are seeking a hard-working and visionary Farm Assistant Manager to engage with us in transforming our 300+ acre farm into a thriving financially and environmentally sustainable operation as an integral component of the overall Thornwell mission to serve children, families, and communities.

Thornwell intends for the farm to be an exemplary model of creative farm-related entrepreneurship, land stewardship, and community development.

A 10-year horizon has been created for the farm. Livestock, Specialty Crops, as well as Agritourism have been identified as the 3 primary divisions of the farm ventures.

Position Description

Position Summary

We are seeking a hard-working and visionary leader to engage with us in transforming our 300+ acre farm into a thriving financially and environmentally sustainable operation as an integral component of the overall Thornwell mission to serve children, families, and communities.

Thornwell intends for LushAcres Farm to be an exemplary model of creative farm-related entrepreneurship, land stewardship, and community development.

A 10-year horizon has been created for LushAcres Farm. Livestock, Specialty Crops, as well as Agritourism have been identified as the 3 primary divisions of the farm ventures.

Core Responsibilities – The Assistant Farm Manager will:

1. Come alongside the process of thoughtful planning and site design of the LushAcres Farm property including overall site layout, feasibility assessment and management of infrastructure improvements.

2. Assist in planning, designing, and implementing sustainable agricultural production systems that improved soil health, enhance natural systems, and increase the aesthetic appeal of the property.

3. Assist in planning, designing, and implementing a plan for agritourism and other visitor-related activities that are synergistic with the mix of production systems in place, recognizes the well-being of the residents, and is in harmony with the broader community.

4. Assist the Director in developing a robust branding and marketing plan for LushAcres Farm’s products and services that is in harmony with the overall Thornwell brand development efforts.

5. Serve as one of the public “faces” of LushAcres Farm at Thornwell, through involvement in community, regional, and state level organizations and networks of farmers.

6. Assist in marketing and sales of farm products, as well as planning for events.

7. Supervise Thornwell youth and volunteers on LushAcres Farm.

8. Other duties required by the Director of LushAcres Farm.

Working Conditions

The Assistant Farm Manager will be expected to directly participate in all aspects of LushAcres Farm. This will entail difficult physical labor, getting dirty, and working in uncomfortable weather conditions. Some weekend work will be required. We also expect the Assistant Farm Manager to be able to represent LushAcres Farm to the general public in public meetings, in market/sales situations, etc.

Qualifications and Requirements

B.S. degree in appropriate field (required)

Significant and appropriate work experience could potentially substitute for the B.S. degree.

Experience with growing various horticultural crops. Identify these specifically in your application materials.

Valid driver’s license. (CDL a plus)

Clean drug test.

Required Skills and Abilities – Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

Ability to safely operate equipment including, but not limited to, tractors and implements, light construction equipment, and pulling trailers

Experience in marketing and sales of products produced on farm; building a client base and managing delivery of products

General carpentry and building skills

Ability to operate power tools and mechanical equipment safely

Ability to lift 50+ lbs repeatedly

Word processing, spreadsheet development, Internet skills

Ability to work independently and is self-motivated, cooperative and flexible

Creative problem-solving skills

Positive attitude, dedication, reliability and a great work ethic

Ability to recognize weaknesses in self and seek professional development experiences that will serve to strengthen knowledge, skills, and abilities

Strongly Desired Skills and Abilities – Successful candidates that can demonstrate the following would be a plus:

Solid experience and understanding in agritourism

Experience in animal husbandry - nutrition, health, and handling

Shop skills such as welding, electrical, and mechanical

Experience with project planning, especially of projects related to the development and operation of a complex farming and agritourism operation

Market (in person) and online sales experience

Experience with website design or management

Experience with overseeing employees and managing time

Ability to work with outside vendors and contractors, budgeting and overseeing work to ensure its successful completion

Applied research; interpretation of research findings
