We are an elderly couple needing help on our Farrow to Finish Hog Farm, especially since Joanne suffered a very serious leg injury on her off-the-farm factory job and is no longer able to help on the farm.
Our 80-acre farm is located in beautiful Southwest Iowa. Our operation consists of grass-fed, full-blooded Berkshire Hogs from farrow to finish the natural way as God intended. We currently run our hogs in paddocks but are needing to expand into more paddocks and repair/restructure existing ones.
We are also looking to add sheep and chickens in the future.
We have new butchering equipment but have never used any of it to date.
We are 14 miles SW of Bedford, 2 miles SE of Siam, 9 miles SE of New Market, 16 miles SE of Clarinda Iowa and 22 miles North of Maryville Missouri which is a larger town due to it college and Agricultural School.
We are 1/2 mile off of a paved road on a quiet gravel in the far SW corner of Taylor County
Most work will entail working with Russ on fencing and livestock management in our farrow to finish operation. Construction of buildings will also be a part of the position requirements.
Responsibilities will increase as experience and dependability is obtained.
May also involve any additional livestock that is added, ie sheep, chickens etc, and any vegetable gardening.
Livestock duties might include but are not limited to feeding, farrowing, monitoring overall health of
animals and moving livestock
All suggestions and inputs will be expected, welcomed and considered to arrive at the best and most efficient method to
achieve a common goal of growing the operation to obtain more profitability for all.
It will be a plus if the applicant is computer literate and can help us to establish online marketing and a YouTube channel,
but it is NOT a requirement.
We are currently working towards onsite housing.
Family units "will be considered".
We are a livestock operation therefore the education will pertain mostly on animal management in our farrow to finish operation. This will include a wide range of items such movement of animals, medicating of animals, feeding, breeding, farrowing, weaning, sorting, weighing and marketing.
Breakfast and lunch will most likely be at a local diner
Meats and vegetables will also be provided when available from farm produced products for use in fixing private meals.
Applicant MUST BE Responsible, Reliable, Dependable, Dedicated to helping us grow and reach our goals throughout your time with us, Passionate about farming or at least in your desire to find out if this lifestyle is for you.
Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
To have an exceptionally strong work ethic
To be totally involved in learning all aspects of farming.
To be on call in case of an urgent need.
To work alternate Sundays if requested.
